Mobile friendly websites are here to stay. They've been around for years and have had suitable success in pleasing those of us with smart phones or internet capable devices when searching out details in the online space.
However not is all well in the mobile sphere. The issue has been that some websites sporting the popular m.companyname.com subdomain (or similar) have decided that if you're on a mobile device, you're not capable of wanting more information than the bare minimum.
This causes havoc for those users with more than 30 seconds of time to browse a site or potentially a better internet connection than 3G or similar.
An answer to this predicament has appeared lately via a concept titled 'Responsive Web Design', first coined by Ethan Marcotte from A List Apart, whereby the user is king. Site content is delivered in a much more appealing manner in both overall design and typesetting, optimised for your mobile device, and functionality not restricted based on the assumption that you're out of time or data.
Recently we launched TEDx Darwin, an independently organised event from the internationally renowned TED organisation. The website, optimised for a desktop browser experience, is also packed with iPhone, iPad and Android friendly technology - allowing mobile users to experience the site in a much more aesthetically pleasing manner whilst delivering 100% of the content the browser version supports.
Interested in responsive web design and how it can help your business? Contact us now to find out more, and how we can deliver your current website to a larger audience via mobile friendly design.

Future of Web Design is an internationally renowned event bringing together some of the most talented web designers and developers from around the world. This year’s first event in London was held over three days, beginning with a full day workshop and two days of conference talks.
Thomas Marsden elected to send Tyce Clee, one of our resident web designers, over to London for the event in an effort to stay at the very forefront of international web design and development.
The full day workshop presented an excellent opportunity to focus on one topic, and Thomas Marsden chose the iOS workshop with Sarah Parmenter, an expert in iOS app design. Throughout the day many methods and design tactics were discussed, including the importance on deciding what type of app you wish to develop, why, and who the target audience is.
After a full day of planning and design, each three-person team within the group presented an app based on a brief provided by Sarah. The workshop provided a fantastic chance to dive deep into one topic, and nail home some solid work techniques and methods in order to maintain efficiency and increase the user experience.
Offering two tracks for a wide choice in topics and discussion points, Carsonified delivered a well-rounded and informative conference experience. ‘Responsive web design’, first inspired by Ethan Marcotte’s article on A List Apart, was a major dialogue point throughout the three days. The process involvs designing a website to be digested in a majority of devices available to users these days, including iPhone / iPad’s, Android phones, various tablets, laptops and widescreen cinema displays. (See http://mediaqueri.es/ for examples)
Also on the agenda was the importance of ‘designing for humans’, where usability and friendliness of design were are the forefront in an effort to increase the relevance of a site to users, as well as encourage them to continue browsing and sharing.
Encouraging networking with new friends and future colleagues, exciting new horizons in web design, and great food / coffee the entire time – Future of Web Design was well worth the trip. Tyce will be bringing home not just new skills and the latest movements in the web industry, but also an increased passion and drive to ensure Thomas Marsden delivers the most current and future proof web experience for all of our clients present and in the future.

thomas marsdenI decided to write this article due to the shear number of clients commenting to me about high pressure and often dishonest sales tactics used by a very large number of search marketing agencies. By far the most common lines “We can get you number 1 on Google” or “We are calling from / on behalf of Google” seems to be thrown around without meaning or consequence these days. Hence I have complied a number of common questions and misconceptions about the search marketing and SEO industry.
But don’t just believe me, who better to trust than Google themselves, who published the following page on their webmaster guidelines.
What Does SEO stand for?
SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimisation and is basically the process of refinement of your websites page content to appear at a higher position for specific search keywords.
Will SEO give my site top ranking overnight?
No. Search Engine Optimisation is a long term process taking over 12 – 24 months or even indefinitely. The only search rankings that can be ‘partially’ (I use the term partially as it is not fixed and will fluctuate) guaranteed in a very short period of time are Google Adwords, which appear under sponsored links usually on the right hand side and sometimes at the top of a search page. This type of advertising while instantaneously driving traffic to your website can become very costly, as pricing is based on advertising competition and charged per click to your website and once you stop your ranking will disappear.
How long should SEO take?
Asking this question is like asking how long marketing your business will take. The answer in both cases largely depends on the amount of competition in your target market and how broad or niche your product / service is.
Can search rankings be guaranteed by doing SEO?
No, Google and other search engines are independently controlled, no SEO program can guarantee your site will attain a top position, or to even rank at all. Most professional SEO services work to present your website to Google in the best possible way to increase your rank.
If I click on my website in Google will this achieve better rankings?
No, this is a waste of your time, all modern search engines use, among other factors, incoming links to gauge website popularity, therefore the more times you have another website, social network, online directory or forum post a link to your site, the more popular your website will become in the eyes of search engines.
Should I give up traditional media placements and totally focus online?
Defiantly not. Maintaining a good media mix is a key to your success as many traditional publications are now syndicated online, keeping a presence in this place as well as investing in good PR will ultimately grow your online presence as well.
In summary, anyone looking to invest significant funds into search should be well advised on the long term outcomes of the campaign and remember if it sounds to good to be true, it most probably is.
Should you require more information on Search Marketing or Optimisation please feel free to contact Thomas Marsden for a chat.

thomas marsdenBuilding a search engine friendly website has always been associated with limiting the available fonts to 5 or 6 very simple fonts that are available across Mac and PC operating systems as standard. Common names such as Times, Verdana and Arial will be familiar and fairly boring if you ask me. Two options previously existed to use a custom font (embedded images or flash) neither of which are friendly to Google and other search engines.
Thomas Marsden can now offer over 550 custom font from popular foundries such as Adobe. This advancement in web technology allows us much more creative freedom and brand consistency across web and print. And best of all this is 100% search engine friendly! Allowing more keyword rich content to be displayed on each page and therefore better rankings on Google.

thomas marsdenIts that time of year again where the decorations come out, the crowds come in and businesses are looking to advertise the christmas goodies they have in store. Typically, people start shopping for Christmas by late October so it makes sense to start advertising what's in stock at the same time. Leaving advertising too late means you miss out on the organized christmas shoppers who start early and therefore limit your audience to the last minute ones.
The lesson being taught here is essentially to get in early and maximize your profit by advertising to a broader audience.
Here at Thomas Marsden Advertising we understand the importance of fast turnaround times and quality, reliable service especially at this time of year and can provide you with quick, stress-free solutions for any of your advertising needs. From concept to completion we manage your project every step of the way ensuring there is minimum effort from your side, which in turn saves you time.

website developmentLate 2009 was witness to a select number of conservative advertisers including insurance giant GIO removing their domain names for TVC and print based advertising call to actions in favour of a search box with the appropriate business name typed in alongside the traditional phone number.
This move by top advertisers backs up trends we have been seeing in our site analytics for months. Users are now more likely to now simply use Google (or use another search engine) to search for a business name, rather than type the full domain in the browsers address bar. And why not, searching for the name will more likely give you quick access to the website homepage, instead of guessing at the domain name if you were not 100% familiar with the spelling or domain type. It also opens up access to internal pages quicker, say if you were searching specifically for business contact details.
So what does this mean for your business? It creates an even stronger argument for completion of an ongoing search engine optimisation campaign on your website to ensure that a) your website actually appears on all major search engines, b) secondly, the site is well optimised to your required keywords and a standard which search engines require and finally c) that you gain popularity by keyword rich, incoming links, the key to increasing your rank on your keywords and generate more traffic.
Thomas Marsden offer a fully managed Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) program that is guaranteed to add value to your website, increase rank and drive more search traffic through your pages.

website developmentGoogle Adwords offer some extraordinary tools that allow you to very easily design and implement a targeted search advertising campaign in as little as 30 minutes. This articles delves deep into the rich toolset offered, which will allow you to optimise your keywords and ad placement to make your dollar go further and gain better results.
1. Optimise your keywords
Good optimisation of your keywords is the first place to start. The inbuilt keyword selection tool, can give you a very accurate gauge on keyword popularity, advertiser competition and estimated cost per click data.
2. Target specific geographical locations
By default, Adwords will display your ads worldwide, this may be perfect if you have an online shop, with the ability to distribute products internationally. But if you are a service orientated business, only targeting users in NSW or Sydney then clicks outside this area are wasted money, Adwords allows you to select very specific geographic regions for display of your ads, with approximately 20 zones within NSW alone.
3. Rotate Ad Creative
Ad creative, or the text displayed on your ads is the bait to capture your potential customer. Instead of running a single ad for each set of keywords, take advantage of ad rotation, that way the most popular ads are shown more, resulting in more clicks.4. Configure your ad display times
If your product or service primarily targets businesses, displaying ads on the weekend or at night would statically yield less results than those displayed within normal work hours. For the best results, particularly if you have a limited budget, think like your potential customers, and what time they are most likely to be searching for your product or service.
And finally, once you have completed the previous 4…
5. Spend more, Get more.
Even the best optimised ads and keywords will only take your traffic levels so far, once you are satisfied your ads are correctly targeted and generating definite leads, increase your daily ad spend to generate more traffic and therefore sales.
For advice or information on our Search Advertising Management service contact us today.

website developmentIts one thing to know where your website receives traffic from, but another thing all together to see which methods are actually achieving you results…. The answer: Google Analytics and Website Goals…
Google Analytics is by far the most comprehensive statistics package available to website administrators, based on the enterprise level Urchin statistics software, Google offer this service at no cost and are constantly providing extremely useful extended features.
One feature commonly overlooked, or put on the backburner is Website Goals. The feature does basically what it states, allows you to define a set of practical goals for your website traffic, in the same way you would with any marketing strategy, but automated and for your website. Some example can include:
Goals can be configured for most common traffic sources, and even can include tracking of traditional mediums such as phone calls and print based publications. Making use of this features provides you with a much more extensive overview of how users enter and travel through your website, navigational trends and more accurate statistics on where to direct your advertising dollar to capture customers that lead to sales.
If you would like to make the most of your websites’ analytics, get in touch to discuss the options.

website developmentOver the last few months we have been working with BFSD Global, a skills training company based in Sydney to develop their first iPhone application. BFSD came to us with the requirement to be the first training company worldwide to offer a training course via the increasingly popular iPhone, giving individual users the option to undertake training where and when they choose.
Win@Sales, which delves into the do’s and don’ts of making a successful sales call, was the first course to be taken onto the mobile format and is now available on the App Store for download.
See screen shots below or download the full application here – www.itunes.com/apps/win@sales

We are now very proud to offer iPhone development as a new cutting edge service to all our clients.

website developmentEarly on in May, we completed and launched a brand new website for CBC Bearings, the national bearing and power transmission company opted for Thomas Marsden to update their existing website after almost 10 years on the static HTML version. The new site features a full content management system, many, many dynamic features including blog and some very cleaver Google maps integration. This project is defiantly worth a look if you are planning to update your website or implement a large scale content management system.

website developmentWith the launch of the iPhone to Australian consumers in mid 2008 and 3G coverage increasing to an all time high of 96%, mobile website development and content creation is about move to new heights.
The next generation of smart phones, lead by Apples iPhone and other new competitors such as Googles Android are re-writing the traditional rule book (held by household names like Nokia and Motorola) into a mobilized world where anything is possible from the palm of your hand. Dubbed by the development community as Mobile 2.0, the current phase will see similar sweeping changes that the internet felt 5 or so years ago when Web 2.0 invigorated the stagnating online environment of the late ninety’s and introduced us to social networking, blogs and new levels of interactivity.
Apples iPhone can allow your business to take advantage of a new level of mobility for your internal business applications or intranets. Or, gain a marketing edge, with its appeal to young, tech saavy audiences using the device to search and purchase products online. Whatever the circumstance, we have a viable solution for you.
With all this in mind we have launched a new range of service targeted at the deploying iPhone specific and mobile websites for businesses and individuals, please review our iPhone / Mobile Web Design services page for more information.
And, if your lucky enough to have access to an iPhone, view the iPhone version of this website - http://www.thomasmarsden.com.au/iphone
